Bermuda is not a large enough destination to warrant multiple cruise stops but nevertheless, it’s served by three ports. King’s Wharf is in the west of the island, and the capital Hamilton is also served by its own port, while St George’s serves the northern end of the island. Whichever of these you find yourself in upon arrival, there are excursions available to all corners of Bermuda, but arriving in Hamilton itself can be especially convenient if you’re looking to explore some of the island’s most notable architecture, history and shops. Hamilton’s capital is imbued with a strong sense of history. There’s some eye-catching architecture to discover, such as the Cathedral of the Most Holy Trinity and of course, plenty of maritime history to unearth in the Royal Naval Dockyard and Fort Hamilton. St Peter’s Church is well worth a visit too, whether you’re an aficionado of religious architecture or not, being as it is the oldest Anglican Church in the Western Hemisphere.
Bermuda’s natural attractions are astonishingly beautiful, and one of the most popular of all is the Horseshoe Bay Beach. Its name – as you may have guessed – comes from its shape and the bay’s pink sands are a joy to behold and of course, are perfect to soak up some rays upon. The Crystal Caves offer an altogether more subterranean but no less beautiful natural experience, with some awesome stalactites, stalagmites and lakes to discover. They can also serve as a welcome and engaging respite from the heat which beats down on the island, 120 feet above.
Bermuda Aquarium, Natural History Museum and Zoo is the must-book excursion if you’re visiting with the kids, and is one of the island’s most popular attractions with visitors of all ages. Here there are more than 75 species of fish, a huge rock tank and a living coral reef as well as seals, turtles and even monkeys. It’s a diverse representation of Caribbean wildlife and a great place to visit. When it comes to celebrated landmarks on Bermuda, top of the list is the lofty Gibbs Hill Lighthouse, none other than the world’s oldest cast iron lighthouse. It’s in full working order, there’s a tea room and as you would imagine, the commanding views of the island and of the ocean are more than worth the climb to the top.
